SHOULDERS, BACK, ARMS, AND LOWER LEGS
The shoulders, back, arms, and lower legs have a variety of sensitive areas. Be most careful around the armpits and the backs of the knees because touching there can certainly jolt some people out of a relaxing state. The underside of the arm tends to be more sensitive than the top of the arm. For many individuals, the top of the arm and the legs will have some hair that will provide a different sensation than just touching bare skin. To access the recipient’s back, you can have him or her sit backward in a chair or lie on his or her stomach if you have an appropriate location.
“When someone gently touches my hands, arms, shoulders, or back in random patterns, I experience very strong ASMR. When someone caresses my back, arms, neck, or hands, every muscle in my body goes limp. Fingers are best, they apply just enough pressure to really be felt.”
—Monika, 22, female, Norway
Examples of touch activities for shoulders, back, arms, and lower legs include the following:
• Shoulder, back, arm, and leg touching: You can run your fingers in long, straight lines; make creative patterns; or move your fingers randomly. You can also give special attention to any hair via some light touching or gentle tugging.
• Trace the vessels: Some individuals have visible blood vessels in these areas, especially the arms. You can gently trace these with your fingers. These surface vessels may be less prominent if the person is cold or nervous. Warming up the room or warming up the arm directly with a warm cloth can help bring more blood to these vessels.
• Connect the dots: Some individuals also have freckles, moles, and other small marks. Connect them by grazing your finger from one to another. You can also count them in a soft voice or whisper.
• Shapes and forms: Drawing shapes, letters, numbers, or words makes it easy for you to come up with patterns and may just seem like random patterns to the other person. You could invite the person to guess the shapes and forms aloud or quietly to himself or herself, but that could be too engaging and detract from the relaxing moment.
• Body lotion application: You can apply small dabs of body lotion or moisturizer and spread it using different finger patterns.
